Matthew Wolf – Capital Group Partner and Investment Analyst
Matthew Wolf, Capital Group partner and investment analyst from August 2008 to February 2023, was responsible for evaluating, recommending and investing in European energy and utilities, as well as Asia-Pacific telecommunications and the Australian real estate, banking, insurance and retail sectors. He managed a portfolio of around $2 billion in eight equity mutual funds with both income and growth mandates. From 2014 to 2017, Mr Wolf served as research portfolio coordinator for the group’s New Perspective Fund, and from 2022 to 2023 he served the same role for the group’s Capital World Growth and Income Fund.
Between September 2017 and August 2019, Mr Wolf was also a research director for the group, leading a team of eight investment analysts with Asia-Pacific responsibilities. In this role he recruited, hired and mentored new analysts and gathered and delivered portfolio manager feedback for performance reviews. He also organised investment retreats and assigned coverage.
Career History
Prior to joining the Capital Group, Matthew Wolf (Switzerland) was an associate at the private equity firm Bain Capital, based in Boston, Massachusetts. Conducting business and financial diligence in the retail, industrial, pharmaceutical, chemical, healthcare and consumer sectors for eight leveraged buyout transactions fell under Mr Wolf’s remit. Four of these transactions closed: Nutro, Warner Chilcott, Toys R Us and FCI.
From September 2000 to February 2004, Mr Wolf was a strategy consultant at the Monitor Group in New York. Here, he worked on strategy, marketing, distribution projects and finance with clients in the private equity, agrochemical, pharmaceutical, mortgage, software, professional services, telecommunications and non-profit sectors.
Education
Mr Wolf is a graduate of Yale University, where he was awarded a BA, cum laude, with a double major in economics and international studies, in 1999. From here, he went on to study at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he successful completed an MBA between 2006 and 2008. As part of this course of study, he undertook internships with the Hong Kong hedge fund Buena Vista Fund Management and the private equity firm TA Associates.
Hobbies and Interests
When he’s not working, Mr Wolf has a wide range of hobbies and interests, including playing tennis, downhill and cross-country skiing, cooking and studying languages. Having already studied Spanish, Portuguese and Mandarin, he is now learning French. Mr Wolf enjoys travel and has done so extensively, having visited more than 40 countries to date. He has also lived in the United States, Switzerland, Singapore, Hong Kong, Spain, Argentina, and Brazil.
